 Sleep Problems

Here are many of the common problems I have dealt with. Often families will have one or several of these problems. If you don't see something that fits you exactly, give me a call or sms to discuss.

A child's sleep is a problem when that sleep situation no longer works for the parents and/or family.  It is always important that parents are aware of age appropriate sleep patterns first to make sure they have proper expectations of their child. If you have questions about whether or not your child's sleep is normal, you should contact your pediatrician or you can call me to see if it is something in my domain.

  • Cannot fall asleep without rocking, patting, bouncing in a sarong, pushing in a stroller, holding etc. at night.

Typically this is a sleep association. The child has  learned to fall asleep with one of these types of assistance. In many cases, the child either has not learned to fall asleep on his or her own and has developed a bad habit.

As the assistance by the parent continues, the child will usually continue to wake many times during the night, with most frequent wakings the second half of the night.

When the child wakes, the only way the parents can get the child asleep is to repeat the entire process again.

Usually the assistance given to the child only takes a few minutes. But gradually, as the days and weeks go by, it takes longer and longer to get the child to sleep.

  • Child wakes very early in the morning, like 4 or 5am

Usually the child will wake very early in the morning and is ready to go for the day. No matter how much effort the parents put in the child will not sleep. This is sleep phase shift. This problem can be correct in 3-5 days. see services
  • Bedtime struggles, takes more than 20-30 minutes to get the child to go sleep

Often the child will sleep through the night, but the parents struggle with trying to get the child to bed. The child will resist sleep for more than 30, 45 or 60 minutes. In some cases it can take more than 2 hours. This can be corrected usually in 1-3 days. See services
  • The child wakes at the same time every night and will not go back to sleep...can be awake for more than an hour

This problem is characterized by a child who may go to bed easily and wake at a reasonable hour. However, every night, usually after midnight, the child will wake up crying and protesting. They are not tired. No amount of ignoring or rocking will get the child asleep before an hour or two. This problem can be easily corrected in 1-2 days. See services
  • Child who will not nap unless rock/patted/bounced, driven in a car/pushed in a stroller etc.

This problem is like a sleep association. Sometimes the child can put him or herself to bed at night and sleep through the night but he or she may still have this problem with naps. Correcting naps is a bit more challenging but with parents consistent behavior the problem can be corrected in 7 to 14 days. see services
  • Child that is waking 2,3, 4 or more times during the night

This is a concern when the child is older than 6 months of age. Children 0-3 months of age will wake frequently and this is expected and normal. Children 4 to 5 months of age will start to consolidate their sleep and sleep in longer segments. However, if your child is waking more than 2-3 times during the night and it is creating problems for you, this problem can be fixed in a couple of weeks. see services
  • Child has stopped napping and are under 3 years of age

Sometimes a child will stop taking their naps, but they are clearly too young and tired to go without. This creates a really cranky tired child. This can be corrected in 1-3 days. see services
  • Child that needs a parent to sleep with them

Co-sleeping is a parenting method where parents choose to share a bed with their child. For some parents this works wonderfully, for other it is not a preferred choice, but a method of last resort to get their child to either fall asleep, stay asleep or stay in their bed.If you are in the later category, this can be corrected, depending on the child's age, in 5-14 days. see services
  • Children older than 9 months who still wake for a feed/bottle/sippy cup etc

According to the American Pediatrics Associations, children older than 9 months no longer need to be fed at night. If you no longer wish to feed your child this can be corrected in 14 to 20 days. See services
  • Jack in the box

This is the problem when the child has moved from the crib to a big bed. Parents can no longer keep the child in the bed at night. This may cause problems with bedtime, middle of the night or early waking or all three. This can be fixed in 10-20 days depending on the age of the child. See services
